Video Game Reviews of Guitar Hero World TourCustomer Review: Do not buy Summary: 1 StarsThis game is a waste of cash. Bought brand new and it would not work on my sons ps2 (the new slim one) or my husbands orginal ps2. Can only get it to work in the ps3.
Customer Review: Outstanding Summary: 5 StarsI received the game way ahead of the time I was supposed to. The packaging was better than I thought. The outside of the game looked brand new--not even a fingerprint. There was a small scratch on the disc, but I played trhu practically the whole game without any glitches. I was and am extremely pleased with the price I paid for the product I bought. I have now become an amazon buyer for life. I have bought at least 10 new items so far in November and havent had any problems at all. This was the 1st time I went thru amazon and have become a true fan of your site. I will definitely be a fan for life......Joe P
Customer Review: So many reasons why GHWT can not compete with Rock Band Summary: 2 StarsI know this review is long, but trust me, read before buying!!
Before I get into the game, just want to say: I just breathed some new life into my PS2 by buying Rock Band, RB Track Pack 1 and RB Track Pack 2. From the beginning I was impressed with the game play and the fact that you can get all your friends involved. (so already better than Karaoke for the non-singers)
I got Guitar hero World Tour PRIMARILY for the track list. When I started playing, the disappointment was almost immediate.
CONSIDERATIONS:
1. In case you are wondering, it is 100% compatible with the Rock Band instruments on the PS2.(there's an extra slider apparently for the guitar that would normally come with the full pack, but it really seems irrelevant and by not having it doesn't seem to hinder your play.)
2. Track list is impressive, but overlaps with Rock Band Track Packs and Rock Band II. Looking back, had I known then, what I know now, I would have gotten RB2 instead. (especially considering my next comment)
3. There are 3 Tool tracks that are pretty fun to play. Tool fans will appreciate the hell out of the set up for these 3 tracks.
4. The biggest reasons I got this game: the Songs from Linkin Park, Michael Jackson, Smashing Pumpkins, Wings, Tool. And: "To Sing Them"
INSTRUMENT GAME PLAY/GRAPHICS:
If you don't have a widescreen TV, the graphics become smashed. There is NO way I've found so far to fix this. The Menu is very hard to navigate and you spend more time hunting for settings and options than actually playing the game. The Music bar where you read the button pushes is kind of klunky and because of the background graphics are sometimes hard to read especially in "overdrive" mode. (sorry, not 100% familiar with the terminology for GH)it looks like graffiti or something, I'm sure they were looking for the "rock life" aesthetic, but it is really annoying. A bright spot is that the Guitar, Bass, Drum play are game accurate: If you're used to playing expert in RB, you can play hardest in GHWT out of the box. Sadly, playing this way out of the box starts getting boring almost immediately. (It becomes less difficult quicker) The graphics for the band and the crowd are sometimes painful to watch. WAY too robotic! If you're playing alone, and you do well, the rest of the band starts pointing to you and bowing,(like 'we're not worthy') EXTREMELY annoying! There's hand clapping in the "overdrive" mode which is equally annoying and sometimes overpowers the music. A majority of the time it doesn't make sense where/why they're clapping and it doesn't seem natural. (again, too robotic.)
VOCAL MODE:
The absolute worst vocal engine I've ever played! I've played the majority of the Karaoke Revolution games, a couple of the sing-star games and I also use the vocal engine in Rock Band for the basis of my comparison. If you're used to playing "Hard" or "Expert" in Rock Band, you'll fail every time if you try "Hard" or "Expert" in GHWT. the engine consists of a glowing green dot that punches a continuous hole in the background image. It's extremely hard to understand if you're doing well or not during the songs. There are these lines that are supposed to follow the flow of the lyrics. I'm still trying to figure out why they're there during quiet parts. I have considered the idea that maybe the Rock Band Microphone is just not compatible, However, I have a studio compression microphone that connects via USB that I tried using with it too and I get the same results even on an "easy" song. Perfect Example: The song "The Kill" by 30 Seconds To Mars. (not an easy song by the way) The song is on RB Track Pack 1 so I'm familiar with it and I think my highest percentage on Expert is 98% I see that it's on GHWT so I tried it out as a comparison. On "Hard" and "Expert" I ALWAYS fail within the first few sentences. I tried it on Medium and I never got higher than 79% The engine is very sloppy and feels like a throw-in rather than being at the same level as the rest of the instrument engines. This is extremely frustrating when you're playing with your friends and you KNOW you nailed a song on vocals but you still wound up bringing the band down. Everyone I've played with who usually will try vocals out on Rock Band, winds up getting frustrated and gives up on them in GHWT before the first song is even over.
COMPARISON TO RIVALS\SUMMATION:
In comparing "Guitar Hero World Tour" to it's direct rival "Rock Band" (even the FIRST Rock Band) Activision has failed by epic proportions. They had a great concept in GH 1 and 2 and even had better guitar controllers when it came to "Guitar hero III" I plan to get this controller to use as the bass, or alternate guitar for Rock Band. (Yes it is cross compatible on PS2) Since buying this game, I've had the opportunity to play/use the instruments that were meant for it, and they feel flimsy and not built well at all. It's embarrassing that this is their answer to Rock Band. I paid $14.99 for this game used. After playing it, I wouldn't pay more than $7.00 now. (Even with the Tool songs) I have to say that I'm probably not going to keep it, opting to get Rock Band II and as soon as I get a PS3, I'm getting Rock Band: The Beatles. I challenge you to play this game, then play Rock Band and try explaining to me that the interface, engine, graphics, and overall game play are not polished and better on Rock Band.
Customer Review: I Should Have Bought Rock Band Summary: 1 StarsBefore I start with the review, I want to get two things straight. (1) I've never played Guitar Hero 1 or 2 and I've never even played Rock Band. I only played Guitar Hero 3 and I fell in love with it. It literally kept me entertained for months and I can still play it with one or two players without getting bored. Currently, I'm trying to complete expert but I'm stuck on the last songs. They seem impossible. For people who can do it, you're Guitar Hero Gods. (2) The only things I've owned prior to getting this game were three controllers (two of which were wireless) and one wireless guitar from the Guitar Hero 3 package. Keep in mind that I like to play cooperative with another player. I didn't get the bundle because I heard the drums were flimsy and I hate to sing. I also don't want to spend $200 on another Guitar Hero. Now that those are out of the way, I'll address the issues I've been having with this installment in the Guitar Hero series. Note that I'm not putting them in any specific order.
Issue #1: LOADING seems to take forever. This is the reason why I would never bother to create a person. Because I'm pretty sure it would take forever. It takes forever for things to turn up and the loading screens take awhile too. Loading isn't that much of a problem, but it's still pretty annoying.
Issue #2: NO CONTROLLER PLAY-this quality really sucks for me. Don't start with the "it isn't 'Controller Hero'" because I was never intending to spend $60-100 on two guitars. I only have the one that comes with the Guitar Hero 3 bundle. So I had to pay $50 for ANOTHER guitar because I couldn't find a wired one, which I'm sure would be cheaper. Here's another thing. Maybe this is just my bad luck, but, even though I bought a second wireless guitar, the guitars always seems to freeze together. The guitars only work separately. One of them is brand new and one of them always worked no matter what, so now I'm actually thinking of selling the new guitar or taking it back for a refund and I'm probably going to do something about the game before I get so mad at it that I buy a sledgehammer and smash it into pieces because I can't complete a song without the guitars making me fail. Any advice on how to fix this problem is gladly welcome.
Issue #3: I'm extremely pissed at the SONG SELECTION. The only songs that I like are "Eye of the Tiger", "In the Middle", that one by Paramore, "Hotel California", "The Kill", the one by Linkin Park, "Never Too Late" and "Freak on a Leash". I only recognize a few others and those ones that I don't recognize...they're long, boring, grouped randomly, and make me want to fall asleep. Great job on grouping up songs Guitar Hero, you have bad taste in music. I enjoyed the songs on Guitar Hero 3 much better. I never even heard of 7/8 of the ones that I like. I never needed to recognize the songs to like them.
That's all the issues...at least all the MAJOR ones. Others are things like unreadable text and no more easy to read track lists. If you want a Guitar Hero get Guitar Hero 3. If you want a game where you can play in a band, get Rock Band. I heard it's much better.
Customer Review: Diggin the World Tour Summary: 4 StarsSo far I like GH World Tour. I have only made it to the 2nd level but I'm happy with the song options so far. Of course I am happy playing songs I am familiar with rather than obscure tunes. One drawback is the level format. I think I liked the layout of GH III better, this one is harder to figure out for a game novice like myself. Overall though glad I bought it.
