Customer Review: Repeat after me. Repeat after me. Repeat after me...

I just noticed that I've written several grumpy game reviews in a row, and, unfortunately, here is another one. Eternal Poison has an interesting premise (which is part spoiler) but let's say that a number of different character parties must fight their way through the magic (and antagonistic) realm of Besek to find the Eternal Poinson, and save the world, one way or another. Each team has a number of fixed characters and is filled out with recruited characters and enslaved monsters (called majin). Basically the fighting is semi-strategy turn based. And that's really the whole of it.
Some of the CGI bits are quite good, but most dialog is 2D card character to 2D card character. There is a limited array of armor, weapons, etc., and a an equally limited amount of fighting real estate. Since each party will have to go through Besek at least twice to get to a decent player level for the finally, the simply truth is that the player is going to go slightly crazy experiencing the same dialogs and scenarios. About halfway through the game I found myself desperate to reach the ending, with no hope in sight.
But the really irritating flaw is that you are stuck in a one-way, linear trip through the evil countryside. Levelling up requires going back and doing it all over again. At a certain point it becomes almost impossible to get a character up a level, at that that moment all is futility.
But the final frustration is that discover of a bug in the game which cheerfully blew me off each time I got well into the final battle. After two tries failed on my PS3, and a careful examination of the disk revealed no flaws, I tried it on my PS2 with exactly the same results. So I did not finish the game. And, for the record, I HATE NOT FINISHING A GAME!!!
So what would have been a two star game, became a one star game (it would be a zero star game if I had that option). It's a shame, Atlus is usually a trustable name in games, but this one flunked.
