Video Game Reviews of Medal of Honor: Vanguard

Customer Review: Behind the Front Lines of the WWII European Assault
Summary: 3 Stars

MEDAL OF HONOR: VANGUARD is the first "Medal of Honor" game I have played. I decided to play the game after one of my high school sophomore students recommended I check it out when one of our vocabulary words was "vanguard". The game is your basic first-person shooter. It's set during WWII and you play paratrooper Frank Keegan, a member of the 82nd Airborne Division who is later transferred to the 17th Airborne Division. There are four different campaigns to work through with at least two different missions in each of the campaigns. Basically, each campaign begins with your division being dropped at the front of are just behind enemy lines. You have to fight your way through the enemy and meet all of the objectives of each mission before you are allowed to move on.

The game is fairly easy to play and is entertaining a even a little educational; i.e. at the beginning of each campaign there is an educational vignette with "Frank" talking about the things that have been going on. These short spots are very short, but the are quite accurate in their historical detail and give students with short attention spans (like the one I had who thought of this game when we learned the definition for "vanguard") a nice nugget of history that is easy to digest. I also liked that MEDAL OF HONOR: VANGAURD can be played as a multiplayer game. There really aren't many very good action/shooter games that two people can play together. I've been told other "Medal of Honor" games have this feature, but other than the HALO games and the STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT games, this is the first game that I've come across that two people can play and is also quite fun.

Despite the positives, there are some big negatives. To begin with, there are the visuals. Some of the visuals are quite nice, but there are parts of the game that everything is completely dark. I understand when it's dark when the soldiers are in a dark room, are fighting at night, looking through a barn, or crawling through trenches. However, there are other times where the visuals of the game are very dark and there really is no reason they should be. Another drawback of the game is that there are very few save points. If you are fighting through a difficult mission (such as the last half in the game) it can take about forty minutes to make your way through some parts without getting killed. During gameplay there are various checkpoints where your progress on a mission is saved, but these checkpoints are only good while playing the game. If you have to quit in the middle of a mission, you loose all your progress on that mission. The other complaint I have about the game are the clips in between missions that keep playing over and over again in between checkpoints. There's no way to skip these clips and every time you get killed and have to start a checkpoint over you have to watch the same scenario over and over and over.
Overall, a slightly better than average first person shooter game that's a lot of fun to play, either alone or with another person.
