Video Game Reviews of Area 51

Customer Review: If you are a fan of Area 51 conspiracies...
Summary: 4 Stars

If you enjoy the conspiracy theories surrounding Area 51 or aliens, then you will likely enjoy this game. The game play was not too difficult, though there were a few stages I struggled with. Advanced gamers may not find it very challenging, but if you are a casual game player it will offer a challenge to you to beat the game.

What makes this game isn't the graphics which are good but not great or even the voice work throughout the game by David Duchovny which is impressive that the makers of the game spent the money to get him, even though towards the end of the game it does seem as his enthusiasm is waning a bit and the voice work is dispassionate at times. But the real gem of the game is the storyline. The conspiracies and the story of Area 51 is constantly being advanced, right to the conclusion of the game. Along the way in killing creatures and aliens you must also pick up clues which reveal secrets of the military base and unlock hidden videos which give further insight into the actions taking place at Area 51. Honestly though, even though the story is what made this game more than just a first person shooter action game, it does get a tad overdone at times. EVERY conspiracy you have ever heard of from the common ones like the JFK assassination and the faked moon landing by the USA in 1969 to more obscure things like Bigfoot sightings, they are all woven into the story. On the one hand it shows how they really took the time to develop the story of Area 51 deeply, but on the other hand you kind of feel as though its a running joke too - that every possible conspiracy theory is connected to aliens.

One of my favorite sets in the game was the faked moon landing set. This was a really cool stage to just spend a little time looking around the set and enjoying the detail. And when you reach the final stages of the games and you are battling the "Grays" that's pretty cool too. Basically you progress through the game first working with a team (Bravo team) killing mutants, and then after everyone in Bravo team is killed you hook up with Delta team for a stage or two. But eventually you are on your own and encountering different mutants and scientists along the way until you make your way down to the core of Area 51, battling Black Ops soldiers along the way, in an effort to destroy the Grays.

All in all a very well developed game with a strong storyline albeit a bit overdone at times, good voice work by the ex-X-Files guy, though he does sound a bit fatigued by the end of the game (one wonders if he had to do it all in one day!), and good graphics throughout the game. I would have rated the game higher on the "fun" level, but frankly some of the stages are very challenging for a casual player and the game is quite long which in my opinion lessens the fun a bit. However, overall this is one of the best adventure/first person shooter games I've ever played and I would certainly recommend it.

Description of Area 51

Area 51 is a great aracde shooter that's bringing its action and challenge home to you. You'll lead a special unit into the famous Area 51 and discover just what's really lurking in that mytserious, classified desert base. An infectious mutagen has given players alien-enhanced physical abilities but is slowly transforming them into an alien. They must find the cure before it's too late and their humanity is lost. Face off against a horde of horrific creatures - and secure Area 51!
After the smash success of the arcade version of Area-51, Midway Entertainment has answered the calls for a console version of the game. With a cool, sci-fi storyline that includes terrifying aliens and mutants, and the sickest arsenal of human and alien weaponry imaginable, Area-51 is a gory, first-person shooter loaded with action.

Area-51, also known as Groom Lake, is a secret military facility about 90 miles north of Las Vegas. The name refers to a large, six-by-ten mile block of land that contains a covert, U.S.-military air base. The government refuses to comment on the nature of this air base, and since the 1950s, Area-51 has been a hotbed of UFO conspiracies and rumors of governmental cover-up. Now, because of a catastrophic viral outbreak, all the secrets are about to be blown wide open and only you -- Ethan Cole, HAZMAT Specialist -- can control the chaos, contain the outbreak, and save planet earth.

The research facility at Area-51 has been shut down because of a viral outbreak. The distress signal received by the U.S. Army has activated the automatic quarantine procedures, locking all scientific and military personnel inside. It will be your mission to dive into five massive levels within the secret confines of the mysterious Area-51 to try to keep the virus contained.

Stacked with an arsenal of human and alien weapons, you will battle scientists and military personnel who have been infected by the outbreak, as well as an ancient colony of aliens buried deep beneath the facility. Along the way, you will also unearth chilling conspiracies, such as the infamous extraterrestrial crash at Roswell and the faked lunar landing.

Once you've mastered the weaponry and completed your mission, you can take your skills to the global level and compete with others HAZMAT Specialists online with your PlayStation2. With cool guns, fast-paced action, and fun gameplay modes, Area-51 delivers awesome single-player and multi-player action.
