Video Game Reviews of SOCOM 3 U.S. Navy SealsCustomer Review: Another Terrific Game! Summary: 5 StarsWhat more can I say, this is another action packed exciting game, at least that is how I see this game.
You can fight your battles in the safety of your bedroom or family room. And I am glad it is just a game, and not real life.
These men are highly trained, deadly killers, that are suppose to protect us from the evil forces that are very real as we all
know.
Thanks
Customer Review: Excellent Summary: 5 StarsEven though the Socom game series has been getting good reviews for quite a few years I had never given the series the time of day until now. Socom 3 is the first Socom game I have played and I got to say its quite enjoyable. Its obvious the developers poored a lot of time into this game and it works and looks great.
The missions are varied, fun and can be a challenge. There is a great selection of weapons and you can even drive vehicles and change the position on the vehicle you want to be. Say for instance if you want to man the gun mount on the back of a vehicle. One thing I was surprised about the online community is still pretty large and when I got on there was over 900 people playing in varied rooms. The biggest downer was getting things set up and I am not for sure why but I had troubles getting my account to register. I only got in on a few games and I did not experience any lag. The hard part is entering a game room. You might be asking yourself why. I am not sure myself to be honest. Either the games I was entering on were either over or when I got in they were close to being over. Some required passwords. Also a lot of them require map packs to be purchased which is fine. I am not going to invest in any map packs because I do not play the ps2 much online.
The graphics are a real treat on the eyes even on the aging ps2. Fire effects are quite nice and the character models look pretty sharp. The CGI cutscenes are well animated and have a life all there own. The sound is pretty good also. Controls work really well. My only gripes were my squad at times either did not do what I told them or they would get hung up on a wall or building. Whether the developers were lazy or did not have time to fix this portion of the game I do not know. There was also a bit of slowdown in places but it was few and far between.
It is really hard not to recommend Socom 3. It is a great game that really does the majority of things right. My only real gripe is when my squad decides to be stupid and get hung up walls or buildings. Other than the few gripes I have this is truly a top tier game. Granted the ps2 is nearing the end of its lifespan its hard to argue the fact it was one of the greatest systems of all time and this game is shining example of the sheer quality of not only the system but the games as well. I hope this has been helpful as this game is awesome.
Customer Review: Still Fun After All These Years Summary: 4 StarsSOCOM 3 US Navy Seals PS2 sends you deep into combat in a variety of large maps with varied terrain. You get a mix of vehicles, land, sea, and more to fight your way through.
The game is aimed towards realism. There aren't cartooney characters or bright colors here. Often you can barely make your character out against the background. You work your way stealthily towards enemies, trying to snipe them without being seen. The background music themes are generally soft so you can hear the sound of approaching enemies.
The graphics are really rather stellar for the PS2. From floating clouds to drifting dust clouds, from scraggles of grass to gritty textures of buildings, you get the sense that you're in a war zone. I really think they did the best they could with the PS2, in portraying a natural environment.
The maps are quite large and intricate. This is great for both single player and multiplayer purposes. Often a game is well geared towards one area or another, but SOCOM does a good job pleasing both sets of players.
Some of the key combinations can be really challenging, especially for newcomers to the SOCOM series. Trying to get your troops to get into a vehicle with you - or heck, figuring out how to get YOU into a vehicle, can be challenging. This is a game that takes a bit of time to get the hang of.
But that being said, there is a lot of wealth in here that can get quite addictive once you've immersed yourself. The environment is that compelling.
Well recommended for fans of combat / fighting games, even in modern times. The graphics might not be as shiny as current games, but the gameplay still stands strong. Well recommended.
Customer Review: A really great game for the PS2... Summary: 4 StarsThis game was so fun to play, the missions were fun & challenging but not too difficult and the graphics were just fantastic. And I really love the main theme music.
Yes, there are some glitches as others have pointed out, but it isn't anything that would keep you from completing the game or any particular mission. Sometimes it's a bit frustrating because one of your team members may get stuck somewhere (running into a wall, for example, and vehicles running into invisible barriers) and thus you might need to restart a mission. And at times your Bravo team members, which you control, don't seem to do exactly what you tell them to do. And so in some cases you might need to find a creative way of finishing a particular objective - in other words do it yourself rather than asking the Bravo team to do it. But most of the time, this wasn't an issue, and the other team members can really come in handy on some missions when you need the fire support.
There are so many weapons and vehicles in this game that you can pick up and use, or drive, in the case of the vehicles. Dune buggys, Humvees, small boats, military transport vehicles - really the only thing missing I think was a tank or helicopter. That would have been cool. And the detail is so good on the vehicles and weapons, that you really feel like you are driving a Humvee or shooting a gun turret.
This game is much better than Metal Gear 2 in my opinion - it's just much more fun and interactive.
A tip for you: you should allow enough time to complete a mission before you begin. Missions on average took me 45 minutes to an hour to play. There are checkpoints, but the checkpoints aren't saved when you power off the PS. You always restart at your last completed mission.
The game is broken down into 3 campaigns: Morocco (North Africa), South Asia (off the coast of India, I think), and Poland. Morocco has 6 missions, South Asia 3 missions, and Poland 5 missions. The entire game was fun, but I preferred the Morocco and Poland missions. Be prepared to use stealth on 2 of the Poland missions. I liked that this game ended strong - the Poland missions were just as fun as the Morocco missions - maybe even more. Sometimes games kind of peak in the beginning or middle and then the end is a let-down, but not here.
Another thing I really appreciated about this game was the open feel to it. It's not too linear. Of course you must proceed from checkpoint to checkpoint but it's a much more open environment than many other games I've played on the PS2.
Graphics/Environments 8.5 out of 10
Music 8 out of 10
Story 7.5 out of 10
