Video Game Reviews of Final Fantasy X

Customer Review: Mixed feelings about this one
Summary: 4 Stars

While the title Final Fantasy may indicate otherwise, this was actually my first Final Fantasy game. Sure I've heard of the famous FF series long before buying this, but I never had the chance or financial independence to get one myself when I was little. That's why, when I got a PS2 as a gift many years ago, I went online shopping and bought this game almost immediately, thinking it was a masterpiece as I was made to believe.

After almost beating the game before losing the saved data on my memory card and then replaying the game half-way again a year or two later, I can say with no hesitation now that this game is overrated, and its only saving grace is the story, which is flawed and ridiculous in many aspects, but nonetheless interesting.

You will spend most of the time playing this game walking around battlefields and randomly encountering enemies. I have many complaints about this. First, the fights are boring and have not much to do with strategies despite what many people claim. (It's fundamentally very basic.) Second, the game was designed to encourage grinding, the needless leveling beyond what should have been the amount needed to beat the game. All the sweet features in the game such as enchanting equipments, upgrading your summons or your chracters, require too much ingredients or sphere levels for players who do not grind, and without grinding your characters will undoubtedly fall behind in relative strengths to the enemies you encounter, as the enemies get stronger as the game advances.

The game also frustrated me on multiple occasions because you can only save in specific locations, and these save points don't always come at a reasonable interval. It's not fun when you want to stop playing but can't because you have to save before you quit. Not to mention you encounter a bunch of new enemies every 10-20 seconds of walking while trying to get to the next save point. You CAN choose to flee from battle if you have Tidus in your group, but nevertheless it takes a chunk of time to load and/or introduce fights so it really tests your patience.

The game also feels very unbalanced, as some encounters are very easy and some seem ridiculously hard and almost feel cheap. Voice acting also takes off a point from me because they could have done a much better job dubbing in English, and since they did not modify the cut-scenes at all, the timing of mouth movements and gestures are completely off-time with the English dub, not to mention awkward moments of silence here and there during in-game engine cut-scenes.

FF X features a mini game called Blitzball, which is surprisingly fun and rewarding. In my first run, I spent many hours just playing Blitzball over and over again. In my second time though, it did not interest me as much. Blitzball is turn-based similar to the battle system, but you do get to dribble in real time when in ball's possession. It uses random number rolls and mathematical probability to determine whether the pass and/or shots are successful or not.

The story of FF X hardly makes any sense at all, but it tries to be epic in scale and it succeeds at that. The story is often told in Tidus's monologue, but in other cases, it uses in-game engine and CG cut scenes to 'show' the story. What I can tell you safely though is that the timeline in this game doesn't make any sense, as if the designers forced to put together the main story with many segments and pieces of lesser stories.

You use sphere grid to upgrade your characters. This system works but doesn't seem very effective, and ultimately, the sphere grid is shared by all chracters so they all end up like each other in power as the game goes on. (They just start at different parts of the grid.) A more traditional level-up system would have done better.

Overall, I give 4 stars for FF X because it is a game that provides so much playtime and sweet cutscenes that are enjoyable. When I was playing this, I sometimes played just to see how the story unfolds, because god knows I wasn't playing it for the fun of killing monsters. (Did I mention fights are horrible?) For those that can enjoy the archaic battle system this game provides, it will be a fun and epic experience. For others, it will feel like a waste of time on many occasions, yet the overall experience is not total garbage because it does have strong points that provide entertainment.

Customer Review: I was a Teenage Girl Trapped in a Fantasy World.
Summary: 5 Stars

I know its been years since this game has been out, but not everyone has bought it, so here it goes. When i played the game, for some reason i had my skeptics about it. I had rented it one time and felt in love with it so bad that i got it for christmas. I would daydream about this game sometimes when i was at school, now that i look back i must have been one weird girl in love with a video game character.

It's bascially about this Famous blitzball player (he'll narrate the whole game for you) who's performing that night. A mysterious monster comes and tears his home, Zanarkand, taking him 1000 years into the future where his world no longer exists but only in the state of ruins. You get to meet and explore this new world called Spira, plus their strict religion. Painfully, Tidus, the character you control has to watch what he says around people or he may get punched in the face and be chased down. He'll meet a summoner who feels its her destiny to follow in her father's footsteps and protect spira from the same mosnter, Sin who attacked Tidus' home. You will travel with her and her guardians by foot to Zanarkand

What I like about the game is that there are many intelligent races such as the Ronso, Albhed, Hypello, Guado etc. And at some points you will be pulled into the middle of some of their personal wars against each other. bascially drama. The Albhed has a language you can try and learn. You can pick up Albhed Primers i believe and it'll help you understand what they are saying.

The battle system is smart, because to the right of the screen i believe is a little window showing who's turn it will be next, plus it will also show you what would happen or how many turns you'll be ahead or away depending on what option you do. like for example, if you want to cast fire, it may knock up or down your next character's turn. it just depends on what you do.

Another reason why it's smart is becuase all of your characters can earn credit at once. i believe you have 7 people. so instead of taking 3 and leveling them up 3 at a time, every single one of your characters can be in a single battle at once. so this really saves time. however only three can fight but the rest of the members stand in the back, all you have to do is call them and they will come.

Instead of playing Cards like you would in the past Final fantasy games, you'll get to play Blitzball. sometimes i would play 4 to 5 games a day. You can easily get hooked onto it.

the music in this game is above average

the graphics are gorgeous

the dialouge is great

Worth buying
